Understanding Damp and Staining
Damp and staining can show up along the chimney stack, causing damage to the interior of a property. These issues can range from small spots to large stains covering the chimney breast.
Causes of Damp and Staining
Water can enter the chimney from the top, travel down the flue, and soak into the masonry, eventually showing up on interior surfaces.
Stoves and boilers produce condensation, which can cool down in the flue and turn back into liquid, causing dark stains on the outside.

Using certain fuels for a long time can cause salts to build up in the flue. These salts can draw moisture from the air, leading to dampness.
Solutions
At Chimney Flue Engineers, we use different methods to stop damp and staining, depending on the cause.
We conduct site surveys to find and fix the problem. Solutions may include:
- Fitting chimney cowls
- Re-setting and re-flaunching chimney pots
- Re-pointing chimney stacks
- Re-lining chimney flues
- Removing damaged plasterwork and adding a non-permeable membrane
